Transparency, Impartiality and Democratic Quality
Abstract
This article begins by highlighting the importance of good institutions to address the democratic crisis the world is facing. The quality of democracy is an ethical option that requires an immediate renunciation to the exercise of arbitrary power by the politicians in power but its benefits will be felt in the medium to long term. The quality of democracy implies free and clean democratic elections, but also the promotion and respect for human rights and political equality. For ensuring that these principles are respected it is necessary to have politicians and governments who craft institutions promoting impartiality, transparency and accountability. We are going to end up with some very brief reflections on the tension between effectiveness and control.
